A Greenville University education is not complete without spiritual formation. Spiritual formation is not solely an intellectual or individual activity, rather it is communal and participatory. Therefore, all students, whether living on campus or off, must attend and meet the required 10 TWE credits and 10 Spiritual Formation (SF) credits at the end of each semester. See "Earning Chapel Credits" article for more details on how chapel credits are earned.
There will be a checkpoint on credit progress at midterms each semester. Checkpoints are designed to help students manage their attendance throughout the semester and ensure that they are on track to complete their attendance requirements. If a student is not on track to meet the attendance requirements, a student will be notified via email and receive follow-up from a University staff member. It is ultimately each student’s responsibility to monitor their TWE and SF credits. Students can check their progress at any time by logging into my.greenville.edu or by emailing [email protected].
Given the foundational commitment that a Greenville University education is not complete without spiritual formation, students cannot be excused from spiritual formation expectations. However, students facing unique circumstances can apply for an exemption from reaching their spiritual formation requirements through chapel or other events hosted by the Office of Spiritual Formation.
Students must apply for an exemption each semester, should they wish to receive one, by completing the exemption application within the first three weeks of the semester they are seeking an exemption.
The primary functions of the exemption application are 1) for students to show need for the exemption and 2) to create a personal spiritual formation plan as to how they will continue to grow spiritually over the course of the semester.
After the Office of Spiritual Formation receives and reviews the exemption form, the student will receive a response with approval of or edits to the personal formation plan. Students who receive an exemption must complete all elements of their personal formation plan by the final day of the semester to avoid being placed on chapel probation. The chapel exemption application for spring 2025 can be found here. Please email [email protected] with any questions about chapel exemptions.
Rationale: Spiritual formation events constitute an important part of the traditional undergraduate Greenville University experience. As the only all-University gathering, The Wednesday Experience (TWE) is our flagship spiritual formation event, helping to unite and spiritually strengthen the Greenville University community. Spiritual formation events seek to equip the University community to live out their Christian faith in all settings and circumstances of life, strengthen community ties, allow persons the opportunity to respond to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and integrate important social, moral, and intellectual issues in a Christian faith and learning context. Attendance requirements at spiritual formation events ensures that each student has the opportunity to engage these elements and experience the transformative power of Christ. Therefore, students enrolled in at least twelve (12) academic credit hours of an on-campus academic program have attendance requirements at TWE and Spiritual Formation events unless they apply for an exemption and are approved.
