Health and Safety Inspections of rooms are typically conducted twice a semester and help deter health and fire hazards in order to ensure the wellbeing of the residents. Also, it is an opportunity to communicate any room or building concerns directly to a Residence Life staff member including your RA. Residents are encouraged to be present during the inspection or the room will be keyed into during the scheduled inspection time.
What are we looking for?
Overloaded electrical outlets – only “power strips'' with built in circuit breakers that are three-prong are allowed. Other kinds of extension cords or “cheater boxes'' are not allowed.
Posters or other wall hangings placed on ceilings, including Christmas lights that touch the ceiling (this is a fire hazard). LED light strips are not allowed.
Pets (cats, dogs, mice, reptiles, birds, turtles, rabbits, etc.) are not allowed. Aquariums for tropical fish not exceeding 30-gallon capacity are allowed.
Illegal road signs and stolen property are not allowed.
Appliances with an open heat source such as hot plates, broilers, toasters, and space heaters are not permitted.
Dartboards are not permitted in rooms or pods. Their installation and use damages walls and doors.
Combustibles, gasoline, explosives, or highly flammable chemicals are not permitted in the Residence Halls. Candles, “scentsys,” oil lamps, incense, live Christmas trees, and other open flammable objects are not permitted.
Bunk beds should only be placed against windowless walls and must not obstruct windows or doors.

This includes but is not limited to bows and arrows, darts, knives, blades in excess of 3 in., clubs, swords, BB guns, brass knuckles, and martial arts equipment. For more information on that, please reach-out to [email protected]
Refrigerators over 2.0 cubic feet. These are not permitted because of strain they place on the building's electrical system. fridges and other large appliances should be plugged in directly to an outlet not an extension cord or power strip.
We are not looking for alcohol or other substances that are forbidden on campus. However, if such substances are observed during the health and safety checks, the situation will be reported.
