Students receive monetary fines for several different reasons listed below. Fines can be disputed by the student up to two weeks after the fine is issued to Student Accounts. After that time, students will not be able to dispute the fine and the fine will be permanently applied to their student account. Room Damage
Students are responsible for their rooms and the furnishings in their room. Charges for any damage or defacement will be assessed at the time the damage is reported, or after the semester has ended. Students, individually and as a community, are financially responsible for damage to common areas in the residence halls and houses. When issues with cleanliness, multiple fire alarms, or damage occur in an area, the whole community is responsible for that issue.
Sanctions
When a student finds themself in a conduct situation, it is important to know that the conduct officer working with the student may delegate a monetary sanction to the student’s account. While this is uncommon practice, it is a way for Residence Life to deter unwanted behavior or reconcile to the overall community being harmed by the student’s actions.
Lost Key
When a student loses a key, they must let a Residence Life staff member, or the Housing office know immediately as this is a safety concern. If a key is not recovered, the student will have to pay $25 for a new key to be cut. In some instances, a student will forget to turn their room key into Residence Life when they check-out of a room. In these situations, a Residence Life staff member will attempt to retrieve the key from the student. If the student does not return the key, the student will be charged $25 for the key.
All Hall and All Floor Meetings
Several times in a semester, Residence Life will hold mandatory All area meetings. If a student is absent without approval from a Residence Life staff member, they could incur a fine.
Improper Check-Outs
When a student vacates a room, all belongings must be removed from the room and a general cleaning must be done by the student and their roommate(s). Shared spaces must also be cleared and cleaned by the students. Students are given instructions on how to check-out at the end of every academic year. Students can also ask a Residence Life staff member what check-out procedures are. When a student does not follow these procedures or does not check-out in the time outlined by Residence Life, the student will incur a monetary fine on their student account. Students may also be entered into a conduct process at the discretion of the Residence Life staff member.
